Open Sinus Lifting
Open sinus lifting is a surgical procedure performed to enable implant placement in cases where the bone height in the posterior region of the upper jaw is insufficient. The procedure is based on the controlled elevation of the sinus cavity and the filling of the created space with bone graft material. This approach aims to allow the implant to be placed in a healthy and stable manner. The procedure is generally carried out in a clinical setting under local anaesthesia or sedation and, in advanced cases, may also be performed under general anaesthesia in an operating theatre.
What is open sinus lifting?
Open sinus lifting is a surgical bone augmentation technique applied when the distance between the sinus cavity and the jawbone in the posterior maxillary region is inadequate. Through a small window created in the sinus wall, the sinus membrane is carefully elevated, and bone graft material is placed. This procedure aims to provide the bone volume required for the long-term success of dental implants.
In which cases is open sinus lifting performed?
It is performed in patients who have experienced bone resorption following long-term tooth loss and in cases where there is insufficient bone height in the posterior upper jaw for implant placement. In situations where implants cannot be placed during the same session, implant treatment may be planned after bone formation has been completed.
Points to consider before open sinus lifting
Before the procedure, the patient’s general health status, existing systemic conditions, and regularly used medications should be evaluated in detail. The sinus anatomy and available bone volume should be analysed using radiographic imaging methods. Maintaining proper oral hygiene before the procedure, including regular tooth brushing and the use of antiseptic mouthwashes, helps to reduce the risk of infection.
Points to consider after open sinus lifting
In the days following the procedure, patients should avoid blowing their nose, sneezing with the mouth closed, and any activities that may create pressure in the sinus area. Smoking and alcohol consumption are not recommended, as they may negatively affect the healing process. Medications prescribed by the clinician should be taken as directed, and attention should be paid to oral hygiene. Attending follow-up appointments regularly is important for monitoring healthy bone healing.
