Flap Surgery

Flap surgery is a surgical periodontal procedure performed in the treatment of advanced gum diseases. During the procedure, the gum tissue is carefully lifted to allow direct access to the tooth roots and surrounding bone tissue. This enables thorough removal of calculus, bacterial deposits, and inflamed tissues. The primary aim is to restore gum health, eliminate infection, and preserve the supporting structures of the teeth.

What is flap surgery?

Flap surgery is a periodontal surgical treatment method in which the gum tissue is temporarily reflected to access deep periodontal pockets beneath the gum line. Once the cleaning procedure is completed, the gum tissue is repositioned and sutured back into place. Performed under local anaesthesia, this procedure provides effective and long-lasting results in advanced periodontal conditions.

In which cases is flap surgery performed?

It is indicated in cases with deep periodontal pockets, early or advanced bone loss, and where scaling and curettage alone are insufficient. It is commonly preferred in periodontal diseases accompanied by persistent gum bleeding, severe halitosis, and tooth mobility. The procedure aims to halt disease progression and prevent tooth loss.

Points to consider before flap surgery

A detailed periodontal examination and radiographic assessment should be carried out prior to surgery. The patient’s systemic conditions and medications currently in use must be fully disclosed to the dentist. Maintaining good oral hygiene before the procedure positively influences the healing process.

Points to consider after flap surgery

Mild pain, swelling, and slight bleeding may occur during the first few days following surgery. Medications prescribed by the dentist should be taken as directed, and the sutured area should not be disturbed. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided during the first 24 hours, and hard or hot foods should be avoided. Sutures are typically removed within 7–10 days, and the healing process is monitored through regular follow-up appointments.
